Crowns

What Are Dental Crowns?

Is your smile making you unhappy? Do you suffer from nagging oral discomfort that prevents you from living life to the fullest? Select Dental Care understands that missing teeth and tooth pain can ruin both your day and your smile. Procedures like tooth-colored fillings, dental bonding, and root canal therapy can protect the root, but the tooth can only withstand so many repairs, so a dental crown may be the right option for some.

Many might be thinking “what is a dental cap?” To inquire further about dental crowns, or to schedule an appointment for crowns near Coral Springs, Florida, call us at 954-752-9065!

Types of Crowns:

Unless you’ve had a crown placed before, you probably aren’t familiar with the different types of crowns available and may be thinking, “what is a crown?!” Crowns are teeth caps that can be made from several materials and are designed to protect damaged or weakened teeth. Your dentist may give you a list of options for making your dental crown, including:

  • Porcelain & ceramic- Both of these options are visually appealing because they give patients the closest match to their natural teeth but may not be as durable as other crowns.
  • Metal-alloy – A mixed-metal crown typically consisting of gold and another metal compound such as silver, platinum, copper, or tin.
  • Porcelain-metal fusion- These provide a stronger bond than regular porcelain. They are frequently used by dentists because of their longevity, and because they combine the strength of a metal base with the aesthetic appeal of a porcelain surface.
  • Resin- Composite resin crowns offer a more inexpensive option, at least initially. These crowns bear a striking resemblance to natural teeth but may wear down quicker than other crowns if not properly cared for.
  • BruxZir– These types of crowns are created from the highest quality Japanese zirconia. Unlike other restoration processes, BruxZir has improved light transmission, providing a more natural shade and realistic appearance.

BruxZir Crowns and Bridges

BruxZir solid crowns and bridges are created from the highest quality zirconia from Japan. Unlike other high-pressure manufacturing processes for restorations, BruxZir is made with improved light transmission, providing a more natural shade and realistic appearance compared to porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations and full-cast restorations.

BruxZir crowns and bridges are especially helpful to patients who experience bruxism, or teeth grinding. With a strong structural design, these crowns and bridges can better resist the damage teeth grinding can cause.

    The Benefits of BruxZir

    • Made from durable, solid zirconia
    • Chip-resistant structure is ideal for patients who experience bruxism
    • Glazed to a smooth surface, which reduces the accumulation of plaque
    • Ideal for patients who have limited space in their mouths for porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations

At Select Dental Care, we provide restorations that are both beautiful and durable. If you have broken natural teeth or need to replace your previous porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations, contact us at (954) 752-9065 about BruxZir crowns and bridges.

Ceramic Crowns

Ceramic crowns are composed of materials that are not only extremely strong and durable but aesthetically pleasing as well. The advantage of a ceramic crown is that the crown not only functions like a real tooth but has a natural appearance as well.

    Types of Ceramic Crowns

    • All-Ceramic Crown - This type of cosmetic crown is made purely from ceramic and no other material. The defining feature of this crown is that it's made from a translucent material that is attractive to look at and blends in well with the rest of your teeth.
    • Zirconia - A zirconia crown is a popular type of all-ceramic crown which is worn to improve the appearance of a tooth that has become stained or disfigured over the years. It is durable, easy to wear and long-lasting.
    • E-Max - This type of all-ceramic crown is considered to be the best match with your own natural teeth. It is strong, long-lasting and unlikely to crack or fracture. There is less risk of chipping compared to zirconia crowns. It is considered a good option for damaged, stained or poor quality teeth.
    • Metal Ceramic Crown - This type of crown is often fitted onto back teeth and is strong and durable. It isn't as attractive as other types of crowns but it's a less expensive option.

    The Ceramic Crown Treatment Process

    • The dentist will prepare the tooth so that the crown will fit correctly.
    • An impression is then taken of your teeth and is sent to a dental laboratory where it will be used to fabricate a new crown.
    • It takes around two to three weeks for this to happen, so you will be fitted with a temporary crown in the meantime.
    • Once it is ready, you will be fitted with your new crown. This involves the dentist etching the crown, which will enable it to adhere to the tooth.
    • When you are both satisfied with the fitting, it will be fixed firmly in place with dental cement.

Call Select Dental Care at 954-752-9065 to schedule a consultation about ceramic crowns and whether they're right for you.

Crown Lengthening

Dental crown lengthening is a type of oral surgery that is performed for a variety of dental health problems, including restorative and cosmetic procedures. The surgery involves removing or recontouring gum tissue and sometimes bone with a dental laser to expose more of the tooth’s structure so that it can be treated. The dental laser is extremely accurate and effective, resulting in minimal pain, reduced healing time, and greater chances for successful treatment of the affected area.

Crown lengthening can be performed on one or more teeth, most commonly as preparation for a dental crown. A dental crown is a cap that is placed on a broken or decayed tooth in order to restore function and appearance. A crown may also be necessary for completing a more extensive restoration such as a root canal, implant, or dental bridge. Crown lengthening can also be performed as a cosmetic procedure to help you achieve your desired smile by treating what is commonly referred to as a “gummy smile” – excessive gum tissue surrounding the front teeth.

This surgery is a relatively simple procedure that can be completed in one sitting while you are under local anesthesia. If you are in need of a crown lengthening procedure, talk to your dentist Select Dental Care about treatment. Call us at 954-752-9065 if you have any questions.

Implant-Supported Crowns

A dental crown is a restoration that replaces the top part of the tooth. A single tooth that needs to be completely replaced can be restored utilizing an implant-supported crown. The crown is typically made of porcelain, giving the restoration a natural look.

Many people who are missing a single tooth opt for a fixed bridge; but a bridge may require the cutting down of healthy, adjacent teeth that may or may not need to be restored in the future. Then there is the additional cost of possibly having to replace the bridge once, twice or more over the course of a lifetime. Studies show that within five to seven years there is a failure rate of up to 30% in teeth located next to a fixed bridge or removable partial denture.

An Implant-Supported Crown is supported by a titanium “root” and post, implanted into the jawbone. The implant cements the artificial tooth in place, ensuring a sturdy fit and keeping the tooth and surrounding teeth from shifting out of position. An implant-supported crown looks much like the natural shape, size, and color of your teeth, giving you a beautiful smile that’s sure to last.

Traditional Crowns

If you suffer a cracked or broken tooth, your provider is likely to recommend a crown, a custom-fitted cap, to cover it and restore the tooth's shape, strength and appearance. Traditional crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

There are different types of traditional crowns:

    • Ceramic — These are used for restoring front teeth and are popular in this area for their ability to blend with your natural tooth color. The crown is made of a porcelain-based material.
    • Porcelain-fused to metal – This crown provides a stronger bond than regular porcelain because it is connected to a metal structure. It's also extremely durable.
    • Gold alloys – This crown is a mix of gold, copper and other metals. In addition to providing a strong bond to the tooth, it doesn't fracture or wear away the tooth itself.
    • Base metal alloys – This crown is made up of non-noble metals that are highly resistant to corrosion and make for a very strong crown. It also requires the least amount of healthy tooth to be removed prior to fitting.

To make and place a traditional crown typically takes two separate appointments:

    • The first appointment involves preparing (shaping) the tooth, taking an impression, and placing the temporary crown. The time needed to perform these steps can range from 30 minutes to an hour.
    • During the time period between the two appointments, a dental laboratory will fabricate the crown. Two weeks or so are usually allotted for this process.
    • When the patient returns for their second visit, the provider will cement the finished crown into place. This step can usually be completed in about 20 minutes or so.

Your provider at Select Dental Care will evaluate whether a traditional crown is a good option for you. Call us at 954-752-9065.

Same Day Crowns

Sometimes, decay or trauma has done too much damage to completely restore a patient's original tooth. Crowns are an excellent alternative to extraction that offer long-term durability, protection from decay or cracking, and an improved, natural appearance. Normally, getting a crown involves multiple visits to the dentist. However, innovative computer-aided software and machinery now allows us to design, manufacture, and place a custom-made crown in just one day. The Same Day Crown procedure usually takes around an hour and saves you the time and inconvenience of traditional crowns.

Traditionally, getting a crown meant having a model of the tooth and surrounding area made using a mold and sending the impression to a dental laboratory to make it. A temporary crown is put in place while waiting a week or more for the finished crown to be sent back to the dentist's office, then returning for a second visit where the temporary is removed and the new crown is cemented into place.

Thanks to digital technology, now there's a quicker Same Day Crown option. Using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), crowns can be made in one office visit while the patient waits. After taking a digital scan of the mouth using an intraoral camera (think of an over-sized pen with a video camera on the end), a 3-D image of the teeth and gums appears on a computer screen. Based on the position, size, and shape of the damaged tooth, computer software suggests the ideal dimensions of the needed crown. The dentist fine-tunes the virtual restoration and sends the digital information to a "milling" machine that carves the crown out of a ceramic block, ready to be bonded to the patient's tooth. The entire process takes less than two hours.

Take advantage of this revolution in restorative dentistry! For more information on one-day crowns or to make an appointment, call Select Dental Care at 954-752-9065.

Do I Need a Crown?

In addition to offering durable protection, dental crowns are recommended for the treatment of fractured or cracked teeth, as well as to help hold a dental bridge in place. Crowns are also used to cover discolored or misshaped teeth.

Are you wondering “do I need crowns?” If you are, here are some of the most common reasons a crown might be needed:

  • Protecting & restoring broken teeth
  • Holding a dental bridge in place
  • Covering a discolored tooth
  • Covering dental implants
  • Restoring a filling
  • Protecting the tooth & root structure after root canal therapy
  • Closing gaps in teeth

Getting Your Crown

A crown requires a few minimally invasive procedures that will quickly address your dental issues. First, we will place a cap over the injured tooth, which helps return its shape, strength, and appearance. After that, impressions are made and sent to a dental laboratory where your crown will be created.

While you are waiting for your new crown, your dentist will make a temporary one and insert it in the affected area. When the new crown arrives, the temporary crown will be removed, and the new crown will take its place!

Dental Crown Aftercare

Once the crown is in place, be sure to maintain proper dental care. While a crown restores a tooth and bolsters its defenses against wear and tear, no tooth is indestructible. With proper care, however, a quality crown can last almost a decade. In addition, be wary of other behaviors that might damage the dental crown, such as jaw clenching, bruxism (teeth grinding), and eating hard, brittle foods.

Dental Crown FAQs

  • What Are the Benefits of Dental Crowns?

Since a crown covers your entire tooth, it will be able to hold cracked teeth in the correct position while preventing additional damage. For those who find discomfort in the feeling of a badly cracked tooth, a crown’s smooth surface will provide a more pleasant feel amongst your other teeth.

  • What is Prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics focuses on the use of dental prostheses and implants to improve mouth, teeth, and gum health. Prosthetic dentistry can include temporary fixes such as braces, or permanent solutions, such as:

    • Bridges
    • Implants
    • Veneers
    • Crowns
  • Does Getting a Crown Hurt?

Getting a crown is not a painful experience; due to anesthetic and sedation, the most a patient may feel is mild discomfort. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks!

  • How Long Do Crowns Last?

Although today's crowns are plenty durable, there is no replacing the durability of an actual tooth. Most crowns last a decade before needing to be replaced. A crown’s location in your mouth also plays a determining factor in its lifespan.

  • When Do You Need a Crown?

Crowns are a common dentistry procedure used to correct issues such as cavities and broken teeth. Not all conditions need a crown, so it is important to consult a dentist for recommendations.
